Cardinal Drops Series Opener To Visiting Sun Devils

STANFORD, Calif. - The 14th-ranked Stanford Cardinal dropped a 3-0 contest to No. 7 Arizona State, Friday, at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal falls to 31-13 overall and 4-9 in the Pac-10, while the Sun Devils improve to 38-10 on the season and 7-6 in the conference.
Junior Ashley Chinn took the loss, dropping to 7-5 on the year. She tallied four strikeouts while giving up nine hits and three runs. ASU's Hillary Bach picked up the win, pushing her record to 20-4 on the year.
ASU out hit Stanford, 9-1. The Cardinal's lone hit was a double by third baseman Shannon Koplitz in the first inning.
The Sun Devils struck first, scoring one run in the top of the third inning. ASU's lead-off hitter Lesley Rogers was hit by Chinn and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Talor Haro. Short stop Katelyn Boyd hit an infield RBI single to give the Devils a 1-0 advantage.
ASU added to its lead in the top of the sixth inning. First baseman Mandy Urfer ripped a solo shot to left field to give the Sun Devils a 2-0 edge.
The Cardinal threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. However, Stanford was unable to capitalize on the situation, stranding the runners.
The Sun Devils increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the seventh. Rogers led-off with a triple to left field and then was brought home by a single up the middle by Boyd.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday, May 1 at 1 p.m. from Smith Family Stadium.
