Dawgs Pick Up 4-2 Win Over No. 21 Stanford
April 30, 2010
SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team made the most of its four hits as the Huskies beat No. 21 Stanford, 4-2, Friday night in the first game of a three-game series at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies (22-19 overall, 6-7 in the Pac-10) needed only four hits to secure the victory. The Cardinal fell to 21-15 overall and 10-6 in the conference.
UW junior reliever Forrest Snow (4-1), who came on with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth and worked out of the jam, picked up the win. He threw two and two-thirds no-hit innings. Jacob Clem got the final six outs of the game to record his fifth save of the season.
Stanford starter Brett Mooneyham (1-5) suffered the loss despite a solid outing. He gave up only four hits and two earned runs while striking out 13 in his eight-inning, complete-game effort.
Washington took advantage of two Stanford errors in the first. After David Bentrott reached on an error, Pierce Rankin's at bat was extended when his foul pop was dropped by the Cardinal first baseman. Rankin, still alive thanks to the error, delivered a home run to left, his seventh of the year, to give the UW a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, Caleb Brown led off with a double to left and stole third. With one out and a 2-2 count, Doug Cherry laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to score Brown, making it a 3-0 Husky lead.
The Cardinal finally broke through in the fifth. After loading the bases on two singles and a walk, they got a double from left fielder Stephen Piscotty to drive in a pair. After an intentional walk re-loaded the bases, Snow relieved starter Geoff Brown and got out of the inning thanks to a lineout and a groundout, leaving the Huskies on top, 3-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Aaron Russell led off with a single and, after moving up on a wild pitch and a bunt, he scored on a Bentrott groundout to increase the lead to 4-2.
Tomorrow, the Huskies take on the Cardinal in their annual game at Safeco Field. Game time is 6:30 p.m. and the game will air live on KKNW AM-1150 radio. Sunday's game, back at Husky Ballpark, is now scheduled for 12:00 noon, an hour earlier than originally scheduled.
