Nyan Boateng Invited to Tryout with New York Giants
April 30, 2010
BERKELEY - Former Cal wide receiver Nyan Boateng has been invited to participate as a 'tryout player' by the New York Giants at their rookie mini-camp to take place in East Rutherford, New Jersey, this Friday-Sunday, April 30 - May 2. The invitation brings the number of Golden Bears from 2009 team getting a look in the NFL to nine. He will not be participating in the San Francisco 49ers rookie mini-camp this Friday-Sunday as reported earlier.
Cal had three former players selected in the 2010 NFL Draft. Defensive lineman Tyson Alualu (Jacksonville Jaguars, 10th overall) and tailback Jahvid Best (Detroit Lions, 30th overall) were both chosen in the first round last Thursday. Cornerback Syd'Quan Thompson (Denver Broncos, 225th overall) was picked up in the seventh round Saturday.
Five former Golden Bears have since signed NFL undrafted free agent contracts with three players - wide receiver Verran Tucker, offensive lineman Chet Teofilo and offensive lineman Mike Tepper - signing with the Dallas Cowboys. Safety Brett Johnson has signed with the Buffalo Bills, while linebacker Devin Bishop has agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos.
Safety Marcus Ezeff has not signed a contract but has a workout scheduled next week with the New York Jets.
Boateng recorded career totals of 42 receptions, 630 yards receiving and seven touchdown catches in 24 games played and five starts at Cal, averaging 15.0 yards per catch. His biggest season came as a junior in 2008 when he led the club with 29 catches and 439 receiving yards, and was also second on the team with five touchdown catches. He was limited by a broken foot that caused him to miss two games as a senior in 2009, catching 13 balls for 191 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games all off the bench.
'Nyan was sidelined for much of his career at Cal with injuries and is still developing as a football player,' said Cal head coach Jeff Tedford. 'He will surprise some people with his athleticism and abilities as he continues to learn the game.'
