USC Beats No. 19 Arizona, 7-5, To Win Pac-10 Series
May 1, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Freshman third baseman Adam Landecker's RBI triple provided the go-ahead run in the second Saturday as the USC Trojans beat the No. 19 Arizona Wildcats, 7-5, to win their first Pac-10 Conference series of the season. Landecker finished 2-for-3 with two RBI while Alex Sherrod went 3-for-4 with a home run.
USC improved to 19-23 overall and 5-12 in Pac-10 play while Arizona fell to 28-13 overall and 8-9 in conference.
Trojan right-hander Ben Mount earned the win (4-3) with six innings, allowing only two earned runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Kyle Simon (6-4) took the loss for Arizona, giving up six runs (two earned) on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Joey Rickard led the Wildcats with a 3-for-5 day while Jett Bandy was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Cole Frenzel's RBI single gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the second, putting runners at first and third. Mount was then called for a balk after slipping on the mound as Robert Refsnyder scored for the early 2-0 lead. USC responded with four in the bottom half of the inning. Ashton Kent's groundout scored the Trojans' first run for the second out of the inning. Alex Glenn tied the game with a double to left, followed by Landecker's triple. Mike O'Neill then beat out an infield single to first for the 4-2 Trojan advantage.
Sherrod blasted his fourth homer of the year with a solo shot to right in the third. With two outs in the fourth, Glenn reached on a single, stole second and scored on Landecker's RBI single to center and the 6-2 USC lead. With runners at first and second in the top of the seventh, Mount gave way to reliever Chad Smith as Alex Mejia sacrificed both runners. Joey Rickard then hit a line drive off Smith's glove to score a run. Rafael Valenzuela hit a soft chopper in front of the plate as Bobby Brown stayed at third with Rickard moving to second. Bandy cut the deficit to 6-5 with a two-run single to left before Steve Selsky flew out to end the inning.
The Trojans added an insurance run in the eighth on Kevin Roundtree's double. In the ninth with two outs and a runner at first, Brandon Garcia pitched to Valenzuela and induced a groundout to pick up his first career save as a Trojan.
The series continues tomorrow with a 1:30 p.m. start and a 1 p.m. start on Sunday. Both games will be broadcast live through a video webcast on usctrojans.com.
