Baseball falls in series finale to California, 9-3

BEREKLEY, Calif. - The Oregon State baseball team fell to the California Golden Bears in the series finale Sunday 9-3 at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, Calif.
Sophomore Sam Gaviglio started the game for the Beavers and got behind early giving up three runs in the bottom of the first inning. He finished the game going only three innings giving up seven earned runs off of six hits. He struck out two and walked two. Gaviglio falls to 2-2 on the season.
California (26-15 overall, 11-7 Pacific-10 Conference) took the 3-0 lead in the first but the Beavers made it a one run game in the top of the fourth inning bringing to score to 3-2.
Tyler Smith and Danny Hayes led off the top of the fourth inning with back-to-back singles putting runners on first and second and nobody out. Stefen Romero drove in the first run of the game for the Beavers on a single up the middle scoring Smith from second and advancing Hayes to third. After Folsom was retired, Parker Berberet reached on a fielder's choice scoring Hayes from third.
Gaviglio started the bottom of the fourth inning but was relieved by Kevin Rhoderick and California scored six runs in the inning making it a 9-2 lead.
The Beavers (21-17, 4-11) added another run in the top of the on a Adalberto Santos solo home run to left field bringing the score to 9-3. It was Santos' fifth home run of the season.
California starter Dixon Anderson went eight innings giving up three earned runs off of eight hits, struck out two and walked one in a winning effort. He improves to 4-1 on the season.
Oregon State returns home next weekend for a three game set against in-state rivals Oregon starting Friday May 7 with a 5:30 p.m. start at Goss Stadium at Colman Field.
Notes: Adalberto Santos hit his fifth home run of the season ... Tyler Smith batted second in the lineup for the first time this season ... Santos extended his hitting streak to nine games ... Stefen Romero increased his hitting streak to six games.
