Arizona State's Torrez Named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week

May 3, 2010

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- ARIZONA STATE sophomore Riccio Torrez has been named the Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and OREGON senior right-handed pitcher Justin LaTempa has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for April 26-May 2, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.

Torrez of Phoenix, Ariz., led the third-ranked Sun Devils to a 5-0 record last week, including a Conference sweep of then-No. 5 UCLA in Los Angeles. With the sweep of the Bruins in LA, it marked the first time since 1994 that ASU swept UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The sophomore first baseman was 13-for-24 for a .542 batting average and accounted for 16 runs, scoring eight and driving in eight. He recorded 20 totaled bases and had a slugging percentage of .833. For the season, Torrez ranks near the top in multiple offensive categories, including second in doubles (18), fourth in slugging percentage (.634) and RBI (40), fifth in runs scored (45) and sixth in on-base percentage (.471).

This marks the first career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Torrez and the Conference leading 94th all-time Pac-10 Player of the Week selection for Arizona State.

LaTempa was nearly untouchable Saturday night, tossing a complete game one-hit shutout as the No. 15 Ducks defeated Washington State, 6-0. In his first complete game in his collegiate career, the Huntington Beach, Calif., native recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts. The senior right-hander had his no-hitter broken up in the eighth inning when WSU's Matt Argyroppilos led off the inning with a shallow double to right field. LaTempa became the first Oregon pitcher since reinstatement to throw a complete game shutout. In addition, it was the first time Oregon has shutout a Pac-10 opponent since a 3-0 victory at Washington on May 8, 1976. On the season, he is 4-2 with a 2.64 ERA and 50 strikeouts.

This is the first career Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor for LaTempa and the first all-time Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week selection for Oregon.
