Volleyball Prepares for Final Spring Match after Recent 3-1 Spring Outings

Corvallis, Ore. – Volleyball went 3-1 in its most recent spring outings at the University of Portland Tournament and in their Spring Game in legendary Gill Coliseum on Saturday morning.

 

Senior outside hitter Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) led all hitters with 34 total kills over the four matches. Senior middle blocker Kiersten Sambrailo (Watsonville, Calif.) was close behind with 28.

 

Oregon State opened play at the Portland Tournament with a three-set win over Idaho (25-22, 25-23, 15-8). Sawatzky and Sambrailo combined for 21 kills, while Sambrailo added six blocks and sophomore Tami Brown (Eugene, Ore.) added eight. Sophomore Alyssa O’Neil (West Linn, Ore.) led the backcourt defense with six digs.

 

The Beavers came up short against host, Portland, taking the first set 28-26 but falling 25-21, 15-9 in the final two. Sawatzky once again paced the offense with 12 kills and also led the defense with seven digs. Sophomore Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) served up a pair of aces with six digs. At the net, Sambrailo posted a team-high seven blocks.

 

And to wrap up the Portland Tournament, the Beavers rebounded with a 3-0 win over Seattle Pacific (25-18, 25-22, 15-13). Greenshirt freshman outside hitter Kelsey Zimmerman (Bend, Ore.) and Brown both earned eight kills each with Brown also chalking up four service aces. Greenshirt freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) dug up a team-high 14 balls, while Sambrailo once again led the defense at the net with five blocks.

 

On Saturday in the team’s Spring Game, Oregon State cruised to a sweep of Western Oregon in 25-14, 25-14, 25-21 set scores in legendary Gill Coliseum. Sawatzky and Sambrailo tallied eight kills each to lead the team, while Saxton and Zimmerman added six each. Four different Beaver servers earned a pair of service aces in sophomore Dianni Freeman (Tigard, Ore.), Defoe, sophomore Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.) and Zimmerman. And Sambrailo blocked a team-high seven balls with O’Neil leading the team in the backcourt with six digs.

 

The Beavers wrap up spring play on Saturday, May 8, against Western Washington at 7:30 p.m. in legendary Gill Coliseum. The match will be part of the Fourth Annual Willamette Classic, held on the Oregon State campus from May 7-9.
