May 7, 2010

STANFORD, Calif. -

The California Golden Bears women's golf team will enter the final round of the NCAA West Regional at Stanford Golf Course in a three-way tie for fifth place. The top eight teams after the final round on Saturday, May 8 will advance to the NCAA National Championships.

The Bears, who posted a first round 292, had a tougher time at the Stanford Golf Course on Friday, totaling 305. The Bears are tied with LSU and Texas for fifth place with two-day totals of 597. Arizona is in sole possession of first place with a two-day total of 585. Cal is two strokes behind fourth-place Alabama.

Junior Pia Halbig, senior Roseanne Niven, and sophomore Joanne Lee each carded five-over 76's for their second rounds. Halbig started strong, scoring two birdies in her first nine holes, but struggled coming down the stretch, carding five bogeys in her final nine holes. She still remains in the top-10 overall, sitting in seventh place at two-over-par. Sophomore Daniela Holmqvist was the only Bear to have a lower round on Friday than Thursday. She dropped a stroke to finish with a 77.

This is the 11th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance for the Cal golf team who is trying to advance to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2006. The top eight teams from each of the three regionals will earn a spot at the NCAA Championships that will take place May 18-20 in Wilmington, N.C. The announcement of advancing teams will be made Saturday evening at the conclusion of play.
