Legendary Women's Golf Coach Vollstedt Named PWSA Advocate of the Year

May 7, 2010

PHOENIX - Arizona State legendary women's golf coach Linda Vollstedt will be honored this Saturday by the Phoenix Women's Sports Association. Vollstedt, who currently serves as a development director for the Sun Devil Club, has been named the 2010 PWSA Advocate of the Year. She will be honored at the association's annual awards event, held May 8th at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center in Phoenix.

Vollstedt is being recognized for her many years of service to the Arizona State Athletic Department. In her 21 years at the helm of the ASU women's golf program, the name 'Linda Vollstedt' became synonymous with excellence in the world of women's golf. Vollstedt led her programs to six NCAA Championships and was named National Coach of the Year five times. Twenty of her golfers went on to play professionally in the LPGA. Vollstedt herself is a member of five Hall of Fames including the International Women's Sports Foundation Hall of Fame.

Although Vollstedt retired from coaching in 2001, she did not end her services to the Arizona State Athletic Department. Vollstedt currently serves as a development director for ASU's Sun Devil Club. She has spearheaded the Adopt-A-Devil program, which helps alleviate expensive the women's athletic programs incur in association with competition. Additionally, she was a founding member of the Women's Sports Foundation Coaches Advisory Roundtable, the LPGA Jr. Girls Golf Club and the PWSA.

The Phoenix Women's Sports Association is a non-profit organization that helps girls and women find their power through sports. PWSA reaches out to underserved girls and women, providing them with opportunities to reach their greatest potential by building confidence and self-esteem through participation in sports and fitness activities.
