No. 12 Bruins Hand Huskies 7-2 Loss
May 7, 2010
SEATTLE - Junior first baseman Troy Scott's solo homer in the sixth proved to be the highlight for the Huskies as the Washington baseball team fell to 12th-ranked UCLA, 7-2, in the opening game of a three-game series Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
UCLA ace Gerrit Cole (7-2), who was selected in the first round in the 2008 draft but opted to go to college, limited the UW to the two runs on three hits over eight innings. He struck out nine before exiting in the ninth with two on and no outs.
Washington starter Geoff Brown dropped to 1-4 on the season with the loss. In seven innings, he gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits over seven innings.
The win moved the Bruins (32-10 overall, 8-8 in the Pac-10) into a tie with the Huskies (25-20, 8-8 Pac-10) and Arizona for fifth place in the conference.
The Bruins broke through for the game's first run in the third when Beau Amaral, son of former Mariner Rich Amaral, belted a two-out solo homer to right-center, giving UCLA a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, UCLA used the longball again as Blair Dunlap laced a two-run homer just inside the right-field foul pole to make it a 3-0 Bruins lead. The following in, a two-run homer from UCLA's Cody Regis made it 5-0.
Washington was held hitless through the first five, but first baseman Troy Scott led off the sixth with his sixth homer of the year to score the UW's first run of the night.
The Bruins tacked on two more in the eighth on a two-run, bases-loaded single from Chris Giovinazzo, making it a 7-1 score.
Washington threatened in the ninth. After walking one and hitting another, Cole was relieved by Dan Klein, who gave up back-to-back singles. The second of them, from Jacob Lamb, pushed a run across and left the bases loaded with no outs. However, Klein, the UCLA closer, got a popout, a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
The series continues Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. game and wraps up Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
