USC Wins In The Ninth, 6-5, Against Utah
May 8, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Cade Kreuter's RBI double in the bottom of the ninth gave the USC Trojans the 6-5 non-conference win over the Utah Utes. The Trojans have won the first two games of the series and will go for their first sweep of the season tomorrow.
Kreuter finished 2-for-3 while Ricky Oropesa was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Chris Mezger went a season-high eight innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits. Chad Smith (3-5) picked up the win with a perfect ninth inning for USC (22-24).
Cooper Blanc was 3-for-4 for Utah (19-23) with Jo Jo Sharrar going 2-for-4 with one RBI. Brock Duke threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief after starter Rick Anton went 4 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on 11 hits.
Mike O'Neill led off the USC first with a single up the middle, followed by Joe De Pinto's deep double to right center for runners at second and third with no outs. Oropesa then delivered a two-run double to the fence in left center and Alex Sherrod made it a 3-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to center.
Utah got its first run in the third when Nick Kurozcko's sacrifice fly brought home Cooper Blanc, who led off the inning with an infield single.
Kevin Roundtree and Ryan Bast had back-to-back doubles to make it 4-1 in favor of the Trojans after four innings, but Utah took the lead with four in the top of the fifth. With runners at first and second with one out, Kurozcko singled to right to make it 4-2. C.J. Cron was hit by a Mezger pitch and Nik Gumeson followed with an RBI single. Mezger uncorked a wild pitch to tie the game with Jo Jo Sharrar at the plate, who then singled to center for the go-ahead run for the Utes.
The Trojans came back with a run in the bottom half of the inning on Adam Landecker's RBI single to forge the 5-5 tie. O'Neill walked to lead off the ninth against Stephen Streich and later sacrificed to second by De Pinto. Oropesa was intentionally walked and on a 2-2 count, Kreuter hit the fly ball to left for the game-winner.
The series concludes tomorrow at noon (an hour from its original 1 p.m. start) and will be broadcast through a video webcast on usctrojans.com.
