No. 11 UCLA Baseball Drops 2-1 Decision at UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 11 UCLA baseball team lost at UC Irvine, 2-1, on Tuesday evening before 1,172 at Anteater Ballpark. The Bruins (34-11) had their four-game win streak snapped as UC Irvine (30-16) overcame an early deficit with a two-RBI, two-out double by Jeff Cusick in the bottom of the fifth.
Right-hander Garett Claypool absorbed the loss, allowing two runs and six hits through six innings. Claypool (7-2) logged five strikeouts and issued two walks in his 10th start of the season.
UC Irvine right-hander Nick Hoover (2-0) earned the victory in relief of starting pitcher Andy Lines. Hoover scattered two hits in 4.2 scoreless innings, notching three strikeouts and walking two batters. Right-hander Evan Brock collected his first save of the year, tossing three hitless innings while striking out four.
Cusick lined a two-run double to the gap in left-center field with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, erasing UCLA's 1-0 lead. The Anteaters led off the inning with a single to center field that was ruled to have been trapped on a diving attempt by Bruin freshman Beau Amaral. After second baseman Casey Stevenson reached on a walk, Cusick came through with the game-winning hit.
UCLA got on the board with one run in the first inning. Designated hitter Blair Dunlap led off the game with a walk and moved to third base on a single to center field by Amaral, who was thrown out at second base in an attempt to advance on the relay. Second baseman Tyler Rahmatulla grounded out to second base with one out, allowing Dunlap to score the Bruins' lone run.
The Bruins return home for a three-game Pac-10 series against USC beginning Friday, May 14. First pitch at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium is 6 p.m. The Bruins and Trojans continue their series Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission costs $7 for adults and $5 for children (ages 16 and under).
Game Notes: Beau Amaral extended his hitting streak to a season-high 13 games with a single in the first inning ... Garett Claypool has gone 7-2 with a 2.11 ERA in 17 appearances (10 starts) as a senior ... the Bruins also received one hit each from Brett Krill, Niko Gallego and Trevor Brown ... UCLA's four -game win streak was the Bruins' longest since opening the season with 22 consecutive victories ... the Bruins split their home-and-home midweek series with UC Irvine, 1-1.
