USC Ready For Pac-10 Track & Field Championships

2010 USC TRACK AND FIELD - The USC men's and women's track and field team will compete this week at the Pac-10 Championships to be hosted by California at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, Calif. on May 15-16. The meet will be taped and presented as a two-hour show on FOX Sports Net beginning Thursday, May 20. Barry Tompkins and Olympic gold medalist Joanna Hayes will call the action, while color commentary will be provided by Tom Feuer. Krista Blunk will provide additional insight from the infield. LAST WEEK AT OCCIDENTAL - Shalina Clarke won the women's 100m hurdles and the men's middle distance runners had a strong day leading a small group of Trojans competing at the Occidental Invitational held in Los Angeles on May 8. Clarke won the 100m HH with a time of 13.28, just off her season-best time of 13.21, while Andreas Bezamat-Homer took 17th in the men's 800m race with a PR of 1:52.26, Aaron Adkins finished 21st in the 800m with a season-best time of 1:52.84 and John Carley placed 12th in the men's 1500m race with a PR of 3:52.27.
2010 PAC-10 TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS - The 2010 Pac-10 Multi-Events Championships were held on May 8-9, but USC did not have any athletes competing. USC currently is tied for seventh in the men's race and tied for sixth on the women's side with zero points. Oregon leads both the men's and women's competitions with 16 and 14 points respectively. The Pac-10 Championships resume on May 15, beginning at 10 a.m. with the men's hammer. The the first running event - the women's 4x100-meter relay trials - is set for 1:30 p.m. On May 16, the women's hammer is the opening field event at 9 a.m., while the running events will start at 1 p.m.
USC AT THE PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS - The USC men's team placed second and the women's team fourth at the 2009 Pac-10 Championships held in Eugene, Ore. In the last 13 seasons the Trojan men have captured four Pac-10 titles, the last coming in 2006. They have scored 100 or more points in 11 of the last 13 seasons. The USC women have finished no lower than fourth since winning the title in 1996 and in 19 of the 23 seasons of women's competition. The Women of Troy have scored 99 or more points in 13 of the last 14 meets.
RASHAD CHASING REPEAT AND RECORD - Senior Ahmad Rashad is the reigning Pac-10 champion in the 100m and 200m dashes and also won both events as a freshman in 2007. Since switching from yards to meters in 1976, no Pac-10 male athlete has won either event three times. Also returning to defend a Pac-10 title is junior Oscar Spurlock in the men's 110m HH and the men's 4x400m relay team.
RETURNING PAC-10 SCORERS - The Trojans have nine men and nine women on the active team which scored individually for USC at the 2009 Pac-10 Championships. On the men's side they are: Nate Anderson (400m - 4th), Trey Henderson (hammer - 5th), Joey Hughes (200m - 5th, 400m - 2nd), Oscar Spurlock (110m HH - 1st), Ahmad Rashad (100m - 1st, 200m - 1st), Blake Shaw (800m - 4th), Duane Walker (400m IH - 5th), Manjula Wijesekara (high jump - 2nd, triple jump - 3rd) and Aven Wright (triple jump - 4th). For the women: Kristine Busa (javelin - 2nd), Shalina Clarke (200m - 3rd, 100m HH - 2nd), Zsofia Erdelyi (5000m - 7th, 3000m SC - 3rd), Myra Hasson (400m - 6th), Marissa Minderler (javelin - 8th), Elizabeth Olear (400m - 7th), Dalilah Muhammad (100m HH - 8th, 400m IH - 2nd), Judith Onyepunuka (100m - 5th, 200m - 7th) and Aareon Payne (100m - 6th, 200m - 4th).
