Eric Mina Named Pac-10 Men's Golfer of the Month for April
May 12, 2010
WALNUT CREEK - Eric Mina was named the Pac-10 Men's Golfer of the Month for April 2010 on Wednesday, marking the second time this season he has won the honor.
In April, Mina became only the second Cal men's golfer to ever win the Pac-10 individual title in the 51-year history of the event. Mina came back from four shots off the lead on the final day of the event to capture medalist honors. He finished the 72-hole tournament at 16-under par and was the only player in the field to shoot four consecutive rounds of 68 or better (65-68-67-68 - 216), including a career-best 65 in the opening round.
'It's quite a feat to both win the Pac-10 individual title and then to be honored twice in the same year as the Pac-10 Player of the Month,' said head coach Steve Desimone. 'Any time you can call yourself a Pac-10 champion in any sport, but especially in golf knowing that the Pac-10 in the top conference in the country, then you have done an awful lot of things right on and off the golf course. I can say with a real smile that Eric has done just about everything right. He's definitely earned all of the honors he's won.'
His Pac-10 performance wrapped up an outstanding month of April in which Mina posted a 69.0 stroke average over 10 rounds and finished with six consecutive rounds of 68 or better. The month also continued what has been an outstanding 2009-10 campaign. Currently ranked No. 23 in the nation by Golfstat and No. 34 by Golf Week, Mina leads the Golden Bears with a 70.5 stroke average and is the only member of the team to have played in all 12 events and 36 rounds in 2009-10. In addition to his victory at the Pac-10's, he was also a winner of the Spartan Classic last September and leads the squad with five top-10 finishes. He has been the team's top finisher in seven of 12 events, including each of the last three.
The honor marks the second time the 2009-10 first-team All-Pac-10 choice has won the award this season as he was also the conference's player of the month in September 2009.
Mina and his teammates are next in action at the NCAA San Diego Regional hosted by San Diego State May 20-22 at the par-72, 7,360-yard Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, Calif. The top five teams and the low individual from a non-qualifying team at each of six regional tournaments across the nation will advance to the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga June 1-6 at the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
