Burney Bomb Lifts Bruins to Extra-Inning Win Over Arizona
May 13, 2010
TUCSON, Ariz. - Third-ranked Arizona rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the final two innings to force extras, but a leadoff solo home run by senior Julie Burney in the top of the eighth helped send the fifth-ranked Bruins to a 6-5 victory on Thursday at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The Bruins improve to 39-10 overall and 13-6 in Pac-10 play, while the Wildcats fall to 42-10 and 12-7 in league action.
Six different Bruins had multiple hits, as UCLA had 13 as a team. Sophomore Dani Yudin homered and had two hits, as did Burney, seniors Megan Langenfeld and Kaila Shull, junior GiOnna DiSalvatore and sophomore Andrea Harrison.
Langenfeld picked up the win to move to 9-1 on the year, striking out a season-high eight in a 168-pitch effort. She allowed five runs, 10 hits and three walks. Langenfeld fanned a pair in the first and seventh innings and retired the side in order in the fifth.
The Bruins scored the first run of the game without the benefit of a hit. DiSalvatore drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Junior Monica Harrison then sacrificed DiSalvatore to third, and one out later with Andrea Harrison at the plate, DiSalvatore came home on the second wild pitch of the inning by Arizona hurler Sarah Akamine to put the Bruins on the board.
In the top of the third, a bad break cost the Bruins a run. Shull singled to right and moved to second on an infield single to third by DiSalvatore. After Monica Harrison grounded into a fielder's choice to short with Shull being retired at third for the second out, Langenfeld hit a ball to the right side, but it hit Harrison, which counted for the third out and the end of the inning.
In the bottom of the inning, the Wildcats got three infield singles by Karissa Buchanan, Brittany Lastrapes and Stacie Chambers, but Langenfeld struck out Brigette Del Ponte on a 12-pitch at-bat to end the threat.
In the fourth, UCLA added another run when Yudin homered to right-center on an 0-2 pitch, her sixth long ball of the season, to put the Bruins on top 2-0.
The Bruins sent eight to the plate in the sixth, scoring three runs on six hits. Langenfeld doubled down the right-field line and was pinch-run for by junior Grace Murray, who moved to third on a single up the middle by Andrea Harrison and scored on a single to right by Yudin to make it 3-0. After Burney singled to left to load the bases, sophomore Samantha Camuso grounded into a double play, but junior Amy Crawford, who was running for Andrea Harrison, scored to put the Bruins up 4-0. Shull followed with a run-scoring single to right to plate Yudin to make it 5-0.
The Wildcats scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of solo homers. Del Ponte hit a leadoff bomb and Kristen Arriola had a one-out homer to make it 5-2.
Arizona tied it in the seventh. Lauren Schutzler walked to open the inning, K'Lee Arredondo reached on an infield single and Chambers hit a three-run homer to left to tie the score at five.
Burney gave the Bruins the lead back in the top of the eighth, belting a 1-0 pitch out to straightaway center for her team-leading 15th homer of the season to make it 6-5.
The Wildcats got a one-out double by Lastrapes in the bottom of the eighth, but Langenfeld struck out Schutzler and got Arredondo to ground out to third to end the game.
