Four Beavers to Moonlight at Pac-10 Track Championships
May 13, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's track team will tie up their laces and hit the track this weekend along with four football student-athletes in Berkeley, Calif. for the 2010 Pac-10 Track and Field Championship May 15-16 at Edwards Stadium on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.
Competing for the Beavers on the men's side will be four members of the Oregon State football team; Keynan Parker, Markus Wheaton, Jordan Bishop and Obum Gwacham. It will be the first time since 1988 that Oregon State male student-athletes will be competing in outdoor track and field events.
Parker and Wheaton competed this winter indoor track events running the 60 meter dash but it will be their first time competing for Oregon State outdoors. Parker will be competing in the 100 meters while Wheaton tests his speed in the 200 meters. Parker's 60-meter indoor time was 6.86 while Wheaton put up the best time for the Beavers with a time of 6.82.
Bishop competed in the high jump twice during the indoor season and put up a best height of 7'-00.50' at the UW Last Chance Qualifier in early March and has not competed since then.
Gwacham also competed twice in the high jump during the indoor season and posted a best height of 7'-01.00' at the UW Last Chance Qualifier. He has also competed twice during the outdoor track season at the Oregon Preview in March and most recently at the Oregon Twilight last week. At both outdoor meets he posted a height of 7'-01.75' which places him 17th overall in the country for the event.
By Bishop and Gwacham both posting heights of over seven feet in the high jump, they became the ninth and 10th men in school history to surpass that benchmark. The all-time mark for the high jump at Oregon State was set by Tom Woods with a height of 7'-04.50' set in 1973.
The Pac-10 Championship marks the final opportunity of the season for the Beavers to improve on their season and personal bests for a chance to move on to the NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas May 27-29. To qualify for the west regional, athletes do not have to hit a qualifying mark in the event like in previous years but must to finish in the top-48 in the region.
Also, competing on the women's side, redshirt sophomore Laura Carlyle starts the competition for Oregon State in the first section running of the 1,500 meters. Carlyle set the school record in the event last weekend at the Oregon Twilight with a time of 4:24.04. Following Carlyle in the section two running of the 1,500 will be sophomore Casey Masterson who set the previous school record with a time of 4:25.18.
Junior Ashley Berry and freshman Taylor Hunt will be in the first section of the 800 meter run and will be followed by freshman Ashley Mayfield in the section two running.
Redshirt freshman Olivia Poblacion will run the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the fourth time this season and has improved her time with every race.
Oregon State record holder freshman Sandra Martinez and junior Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson will test their endurance with the 10,000 meters. Martinez set the school record in only her second time competing in the event at the 52nd Annual Mt. SAC Relays in April with a time of 35:27.82.
Junior Abby Chesimet will conclude the competition for the Oregon State women in the running of the 5,000 meters. Chesimet broke the school record for the event by more than 11 seconds at the Stanford Invitational at the end of March. Martinez also bested the school record in the same race and is currently second all-time in the event.
For every event except the 5,000 meter and the high jump which will take place Saturday, May 15, the Oregon State competitors will be competing in preliminary trial heats Friday, May 14 with the event finals coming on Saturday.
The 2010 Pac-10 Championships will be broadcasted via tape delay on FSN Northwest Friday, May 21 at 11 a.m. PST and will be repeated Saturday, May 22 at 12 p.m. PST. Barry Tompkins will be doing the play-by-play, Joanna Hayes and Tom Feuer doing the analysis and Krista Blunk will be trackside.
Live results will be posted throughout the meet at www.sml1.com/recordtiming/cal/pac10_2010/, while complete results following each day will be available on the internet at www.calbears.com or www.pac-10.org.
