Box Score

Berkeley, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team (24-29, 4-15) scored first, capitalizing on a pair of No. 12 California (39-17, 8-11), but the Beavers fell 9-1 in five innings at Levine-Fricke Field on Thursday in the series opener.

Oregon State was led by freshman Lea Cavestany, who posted a 1.000 on base percentage, reaching on an error, single and walk in her three plate appearances.

Oregon State struck first early with Cavestany reaching on an error by Taylor Kelly before advancing to third on a throwing error by Elia Reed. Three pitches later, Cavestany scored on an illegal pitch by Jolene Henderson to make it a 1-0 game in the first half inning.

The Golden Bears tied things up in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single by Jace Williams with junior Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) recording the putout the plate to save another run scored.

Cal put two more runners on in the second on back-to-back walks with sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) relieving freshman Marina Demore (Vancouver, British Columbia) after two batters. Hall earned the second out on an Elia Reid strikeout before striking out her sister Jamia Reid to get third out with Reid being charged with interference as the ball got away from senior Tarah Black (Portland, Ore.) on a swinging strike three as J. Reid collided with first baseman freshman Ally Kutz (Mt. Vernon, Wash.).

A big third inning put another five runs on the board for Cal to give the Golden Bears the 6-1 advantage on four hits, one Oregon State error and four walks. And Cal scored one more in the fourth on a solo home run before a pair in the fifth on a walk and RBI single.

Hall was the pitcher of record, throwing 2.0 innings and striking out three, making her record 17-21 on the season. Cal’s Henderson earned the complete game win to improve to 17-9 on the season.

Oregon State continues the series to close out the series at No. 12 California. The next game is on Friday at 3:00 p.m. Follow these games live through GameTracker or on Twitter – OregonStateSB.
