STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 15 Stanford softball team secured its third Pac-10 series win of the season with a 5-1 victory over the visiting Oregon Ducks, Friday, at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal improves to 35-17 overall and 7-13 in the Pac-10, while the Ducks fall to 33-18 and 8-12 in the conference.
Stanford pitcher Ashley Chinn improved to 10-8 with the win. The junior tallied four strikeouts, while giving up just one run on three hits in 7.0 innings of work. Oregon pitcher Sam Skillingstad took the loss, dropping to 11-6 on the season.
The Cardinal jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Haber led off with base hit and then both Ashley Hansen and Shannon Koplitz drew walks to load the bases. Haber was then walked in as freshman Jenna Rich was the third straight Cardinal to draw a walk. With the bases still loaded, Oregon catcher Ashley Kivett's attempt to pick off Hansen at third resulted in a throwing error, which allowed Hansen to score for the 2-0 advantage.
Still with no outs, Neill ripped a double to left field, scoring Koplitz and Rich for the 4-0 lead. It marked Neill's 11th double of the season and she now has 144 career RBI, good for sixth all-time in program history.
The Ducks avoided the shutout in the top of the fourth inning. Center fielder Neena Bryant scored on a sacrifice fly by short stop Kelsey Chambers to cut the Stanford lead to 4-1.
Stanford added another run in the sixth inning to increase its lead to 5-1. Sophomore Sarah Hassman led off the inning with a walk. She then recorded her team-leading 22nd stolen base of the season. Hassman advanced to third as Haber grounded out to first base, and then finally scored on a wild pitch by Oregon pitcher Jessica Moore.
The series finale between the Cardinal and the Ducks is scheduled for Saturday, May 15 at Noon. Stanford will honor its three seniors prior to the game at Smith Family Stadium.
