CORVALLIS, Ore. - Washington and Oregon State combined for 24 hits, including 10 for extra bases as the Beavers out-slugged the Huskies for an 8-6 win Friday night at Goss Stadium.

The Huskies (25-23 overall, 8-11 in the Pac-10) gave up three runs in the third and, despite continually closing the gap, were never able to get back to even. Oregon State improved to 25-18 overall and 8-11 in the conference.

Husky senior Doug Cherry knocked two of the UW's four doubles on the night. He, Chase Anselment (who tripled) and Miles Kizer were 2-for-4 for the visitors.

UW starter Geoff Brown (1-5) suffered the loss, allowing four runs over three innings. OSU's Greg Peavey (4-2) gave up four runs on five and two-thirds to pick up the win.

Neither team was able to push a run across until the bottom of the third when Carter Bell led off with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Smith. Adalberto Santos followed the sac fly with a single and then Stefan Romero belted his 13th homer run of the season to give the Beavers a 3-0 lead.

Washington answered in the fourth. Anselment led off the inning with a triple to center and scored on a double from Caleb Brown to open the inning. After the next two batters were retired, left fielder Julien Pollard laced a double down the right-field line to drive in Brown, cutting the OSU lead to 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, the lead was back to three runs as Santos' one-out triple scored two more Beavers, making it a 5-2 game. In the fifth, OSU's Jared Norris hit a solo homer and Michael Miller singled and scored on an error to up the lead to 7-2.

But in the top of the sixth, the Huskies loaded the bases and Cherry came through, belting a two-out, 0-2 pitch into the right-field corner for a two-run double to narrow the gap to 7-4.

After OSU posted another run in the sixth to make it 8-4, Washington drew back to within two runs at 8-6 in the seventh when Kizer's two-run single drove in a pair.

The Huskies and Beavers play Saturday in a 2:00 p.m, which will be broadcast live on FSN television. Sunday's series finale starts at 1:00 p.m. Both remaining games at OSU will air live on KKNW AM-1150 radio.
