No. 11 UCLA Wins Second Straight Over USC, 15-2
May 15, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Brett Krill went 3-for-4 with three RBI Saturday while starter Trevor Bauer struck out 11 batters in seven innings as the No. 11 UCLA Bruins won their second straight game on the weekend in a 15-2 victory against the USC Trojans. Bauer allowed two runs on seven hits with six walks to improve to 8-3 on the season as the Bruins banged out 20 hits in the game.
Tyler Rahmatulla was 3-for-5 with one RBI for UCLA (36-11, 12-8). Kevin Roundtree had a 3-for-4 day for the Trojans (23-27, 5-15) as starter Chris Mezger (4-1) absorbed his first loss of the season after giving up eight runs (six earned) in 4 1/3 innings.
Joe De Pinto and Ricky Oropesa walked in the USC first before Keith Castillo lifted an RBI double to center for the 1-0 USC lead before Bauer came back to strike out Cade Kreuter and Matt Foat. The Bruins tied it in the third on Beau Amaral's single to right.
USC looked for the lead in the fourth with runners at first and second and no outs, but Kreuter was picked off at second on a throw by catcher Steve Rodriguez and Foat was thrown out at the plate after first baseman Justin Uribe fired a strike home on Adam Landecker's sacrifice attempt. UCLA took advantage of a leadoff error in the bottom half of the inning by Ashton Kent to score five runs. Krill doubled home Cody Regis for the go-ahead run with Rodriguez later adding a two-run double down the first base line.
In the fifth, Krill hit Mezger's 3-0 pitch over the fence to dead center with the two-run shot for his sixth of the season. The Bruins later registered their second five-run inning of the game in the sixth, adding two more runs in the seventh.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. and will feature a pitching matchup between USC's Kevin Couture (2-3, 6.83) and UCLA's Rob Rasmussen (7-2, 3.36). The game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Mike O'Neill recorded a single in the eighth inning to extend his season-high hitting streak to 13 games.
