Gwacham clears Seven Feet at Track Pac-10s
May 16, 2010
BERKELEY, Calif. - Representing Oregon State at the 2010 Pacific-10 Track and Field Championships Sunday on the campus of the University of California at Berkeleywere two members of the Oregon State football team; Obum Gwacham and Jordan Bishop who both competed in the men's high jump.
'I'm pretty excited for Obum and Jordan competing in their first big collegiate meet,' Oregon State women's track head coach Kelly Sullivan said. 'Jordan had a little bit of a sore ankle which held him back a little but he did well.'
Gwacham jumped a height of 7 feet 1 1/2 to finish fourth earning him a historic 6.5 team points. They are the first points by a male student-athlete representing Oregon State since the program was dropped in 1988.
Bishop jumped a height of 6 feet 10 1/4 to finish tied for seventh. Both Gwacham and Bishop's heights should be good enough to qualify them for the NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas May 27-29.
Also competing for the Beavers on the women's side was sophomore Laura Carlyle finished 10th in the 1,500 meter finals. Carlyle qualified for the 1,500 meter finals by resetting the school record for the event in the prelims Saturday afternoon with a time of 4:23.86 and followed it up with a time of 4:27.11 in the finals.
Fellow sophomore Casey Masterson finished 12th overall in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:30.85. It is the first time all season that either Carlyle or Masterson has run the event in back-to-back days.
Junior Abby Chesimet competed for the Beavers in the 5,000 meter run and finished with a time of 17:17.92. Also competing in the 5,000-meters was freshman Sandra Martinez who finished right behind Chesimet with a time of 17:18.19.
'It was another pretty good day for us,' Sullivan said. 'Eleven out of the 12 people that we brought down had never competed at the Pac-10 Championships before so we have a lot of things that we can build off from this weekend.'
