Ryann O'Toole Wins First Professional Tournament
May 17, 2010
UCLA graduate and four-year golf letterwinner Ryann O'Toole came into the Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City Championship, presented by Sprint, ready to make every round count. And because she did, carding 6-under-par 65 in first-round play, the San Clemente-native will leave Kansas with her first professional victory.
'I just felt people always say you have to go low the first day and that every day counts,' said O'Toole, 23. 'As proven today that every round makes a difference and shows that you have to play well early on.'
Sunday's final round at Leawood South Country Club was cancelled due to rain rendering the course unplayable. Saturday's second round was also cancelled. With showers forecast for Monday as well, Duramed FUTURES Tour officials were forced to shorten the tournament to 18 holes. The tournament's $100,000 purse was cut in to $50,000, with O'Toole taking home $7,000 for her victory.
O'Toole began Friday's round on the back nine and was looking to stay close to par.
'The goal was to get through the back. Par is usually a good score,' said O'Toole, a 2009 UCLA graduate.
She was made the turn in two-under par 34, before hitting her stride on the front side.
'I made the turn and after a birdie on No.1 (her 10th), I started hanging out and was aggressive when I needed to be. I had a chip in for eagle on the sixth hole. It just seemed that things fell right today.'
Dewi Claire Schreefel, of Diepenveen, Netherlands finished second at four-under par 67 and Christine Song of Fullerton, Calif., was third at three-under 68.
Former Bruins Mo Martin and Hana Kim, tied for 13th and 26th, respectively.
Next stop for the Duramed FUTURES Tour is the Ladies Titan Tire Challenge in Cedar Rapids, Iowa June 4-6. O'Toole plans to spend the two-week break between tournaments participating in an open qualifier for the U.S. Women's Open and relaxing.
'After a trip to Vegas, I'm going to get ready for Iowa,' said O'Toole. 'I need to show that it's not a fluke and that I'm playing well.'
