CARSON, Calif. - Former California goalkeepers Stefan Frei and Josh Saunders each claimed shutouts in Major League Soccer last week, as Frei's Toronto FC and Saunders' Los Angeles Galaxy tied, 0-0, on May 15 at the Home Depot Center. Frei made four saves, including three in the final minutes, while Saunders made one.
Saunders, making his first start of the season in place of an injured Donovan Ricketts, extended his goalless streak to 397 minutes. Frei and his teammates blanked a Galaxy club that boasted U.S. World Cup forwards Edson Buddle, the MLS goalscoring leader, and Landon Donovan, the MLS assist leader.
Both goalies are featured in Cal's record books, with Frei ranked second all time and Saunders ranked fifth on Cal's goals-against average list. Frei, a 2007 NSCAA first-team All-American, posted a 0.76 GAA from 2005-08, while Saunders, the 2002 Pac-10 Player of the Year, posted a 0.99 GAA from 2001-02.
