NCAA Regionals: Day One - Travel
May 19, 2010
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The California softball team and its entourage arrived safely in the Buckeye State on Wednesday evening. The first day of this trip to Regionals consisted mostly of travel with a little batting practice sprinkled in on the Ohio State campus.
The Golden Bears departed Berkeley from Memorial Stadium bright and early on Wednesday morning - 5 a.m. PST to be exact - to make the bus ride to San Francisco International Airport. Cal flew from SFO to Phoenix and then onto Columbus.
Most of the team and the assorted staff members took the opportunity to catch up on sleep on the way to Phoenix. It was just a short layover, and we did not have to change planes for the three hour and 45 minute trip from Phoenix to Columbus.
Once everyone had picked up their luggage - softball requires a lot of equipment - the team loaded the bus and headed for the OSU softball complex. Valerie Arioto and Jolene Henderson did some throwing with catchers Lindsey Ziegenhirt and Amy Bishop to keep their arms warm. All of the Bears took turns hitting off of tees and taking pitches from volunteer assistant coach Julie Meyer and assistant coach Tammy Lohmann.
After an hour of practice, it was back on the bus for dinner, which was at a restaurant near campus. Following dinner, it was off to the hotel, which is located in the heart of downtown.
Some great news came out today for Cal - the Pac-10 Conference announced today that 10 Bears were selected for various All-Pac-10 Teams. Junior utility Valerie Arioto and sophomore outfielder Jamia Reid paced the Golden Bears by being named to the first team while freshman utility Jolene Henderson were placed on the second team.
Sophomore outfielder Frani Echavarria, senior shortstop Taylor Kelly, senior infielder Vernae Sevilla, senior second baseman Shannon Thomas, sophomore utility Jace Williams and freshman catcher Lindsey Ziegenhirt were all given honorable mentions. Additionally, Henderson and Ziegenhirt were named to the All-Freshmen Team.
Once the Bears disembarked from the plane, the weather was overcast with some sunshine peeking through. The forecast says no rain for Thursday, which will be handy with the Bears planning on a full practice.
The first game of the Columbus Regional begins at 5 p.m. EST on Friday, May 21 with the Bears facing off against Bucknell. For more information on Cal in the postseason, please consult the postseason supplemental guide by clicking here.
