Ten Bears Named to All-Pac-10 Teams

BERKELEY - Ten members of the California softball team were selected for various All-Pac-10 Teams, the conference office announced Wednesday. Junior utility Valerie Arioto and sophomore outfielder Jamia Reid paced the Golden Bears by being named to the first team while freshman utility Jolene Henderson were placed on the second team.
Sophomore outfielder Frani Echavarria, senior shortstop Taylor Kelly, senior infielder Vernae Sevilla, senior second baseman Shannon Thomas, sophomore utility Jace Williams and freshman catcher Lindsey Ziegenhirt were all given honorable mentions.
Additionally, Henderson and Ziegenhirt were named to the All-Freshmen Team.
Jamia Reid is first on the squad, batting .383, and has stolen a conference-high 45 bases this season. Arioto boasts a .349 batting average, is slugging .775 and has an on-base percentage of .583 thanks to her Pac-10-leading 74 walks.
Henderson has played in all 58 games - with 35 appearances in the circle and playing the other part at first base. She has 1.63 ERA overall, issuing 174 strikeouts, and boasts a 0.66 ERA in nonconference play.
Echavarria is batting .349, good for second on the team. She is also slugging .438, placing her fourth amongst the Bears, and has 24 RBI to her credit. Kelly has started 50 of Cal's 58 games at short and is third on the team with 27 walks.
Sevilla, who has spent the majority of her 40 games played at third base, is third amongst the Bears with five homers. With her 28 steals thus far in 2010, Thomas is now tied for fourth place on the single-season stolen-base list and has a Pac-10-leading 14 sacrifice bunts.
Williams has made an impact in her first year in a Cal uniform after transferring from Washington after the 2008 season, batting .313 and slugging .417. Her 40 walks place her second with the Bears and fifth in the conference. Ziegenhirt has started all 58 games behind the dish and has 58 RBI and 15 homers.
All-Pac-10 honors are determined by a vote of the eight head coaches in the Pacific-10 Conference. There are 14 players named to the first team and 14 to the second team. The All-Freshman team also consists of 14 honorees.
