USC Defeats New Mexico State, 5-3

May 19, 2010

LOS ANGELES - Matt Foat's single in the bottom of the eighth provided the go-ahead run as the USC Trojans beat the New Mexico State Aggies, 5-3, in a non-conference game at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans rallied with three runs in the inning to sweep the two-game series.

Brad Douthit threw three scoreless innings and allowed two hits to get his first win of the season for USC (25-28). Keith Castillo went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI as starter Brandon Garcia went six innings and gave up three runs on nine hits.

Leo Aguirre and Ben Harty had three hits each for the Aggies (36-21-1). D.J. Simon went six innings and gave up two runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Harty hit a bases-loaded single in the first for the Aggies' first run. The Trojans took the lead in the bottom half when Castillo hit his third homer of the season with a two-run shot to center. New Mexico State retook the lead on Chace Perkins' two-run homer to right in the third.

Down a run in the eighth, Mike O'Neill led off with a single and advanced to second on a Joe De Pinto sacrifice. Ricky Oropesa was intentionally walked before Castillo tied the game with an RBI single to right. Foat then followed with the single to center and Kevin Roundtree reached on a fielder's choice that scored the final run of the game. The Aggies had runners at first and second in the ninth with two outs, but Perkins grounded out to short to halt the rally.

USC travels to Washington State for a Pac-10 Conference series, Friday-Sunday (May 21-23). Friday's game starts at 5:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and noon start on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
