May 20, 2010
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Jennifer Johnson continues to lead the field as the No. 2 Arizona State women's golf team climbed up the leaderboard and finished the third round in a tie for third place at the 2010 NCAA Championship. The Sun Devils fired off a solid 2-over 290 at the par-72 Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall to finish the round tied for third with Alabama at 7-over 871 (288-293-290). The Sun Devils are 11 strokes behind leader Purdue.
With a one-stroke lead over Oklahoma State's Caroline Hedwall heading into the final, Johnson continued her steady play as she carded 2-under 70 in the third round. She is currently 9-under 207 (67-70-70). Johnson ended her round chipping a shot from the rough next to the pin and tapping it in for birdie. She also birdied Holes 3 and 15, both par-4.
'She's doing awesome, I'm so proud of her,' said eighth year head coach Melissa Luellen. 'She's so calm on the outside. She hit some great shots and had some birdies coming in.'
After two rough rounds, Carlota Ciganda regrouped and fired off a 2-under 70 on day three. Ciganda knocked in four birdies over the round and is currently tied for 32nd at 5-over 221 (76-75-70).
'Carlota could have been another 4-under because she had a lot chances,' said Luellen. 'If she could make a couple more putts, she could really go low tomorrow. She's been hitting it good and having chances. Maybe we can get the putter in the hot water and heat it up tomorrow.'
With birdies on the last two holes, Juliana Murcia finished the round 4-over 220 (73-74-73) and is tied for 28th. Giulia Molinaro rebounded after struggling on Hole 2. Despite being 6-over after two holes, she finished with an eagle on 18 and 5-over 77 in the round. Jaclyn Sweeney also carded 5-over 77.
