Six Beavers to Compete at NCAA West Regional

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Six Oregon State student-athletes will be heading to Austin, Texas May 27-29 to compete at the NCAA Division I 2010 Track and Field Championships West Regional it was announced Friday. It will be the largest Oregon State contingent to qualify for the post season since the track and field program was discontinued in 1988.
'It's great seeing so many of our athletes make it to the regional,' Oregon State women's track head coach Kelly Sullivan said Friday. 'This is the most that we've had since we brought the program back in 2004 which just shows us that we're moving in the right direction. It is also really good to see that we have some men who will be representing Oregon State for the first time since 1988.'
Sophomores Laura Carlyle and Casey Masterson will represent Oregon State in the Women's 1,500 meter run starting Thursday, May 27 with the first round of qualifying. The 1,500 meter quarterfinals will be Saturday May 29.
Masterson held the school record for the 1,500-meters coming into the season but the record was claimed by Carlyle midway through the season. Carlyle then improved on her record with a time of 4:34.86 at the Pac-10 Championships. Masterson's season best and qualifying time is 4:25.18.
Representing Oregon State in the 5,000 meter run are Abby Chesimet and Sandra Martinez. Both Chesimet and Martinez broke the existing school record for the event at the Stanford Invitational which Chesimet beating out Martinez to claim the school record in a time of 16:37.99.
Also representing Oregon State are football student-athletes Obum Gwacham and Jordan Bishop who will be competing in the high jump. It will be the first time since 1988 that male student-athletes have represented the Beavers in a NCAA regional event.
Gwacham is seeded 12th going into the NCAA West Regional with a qualifying height of 7-01.50 which he cleared at the Pac-10 Championships. Bishop comes in with a qualifying height of 6-10.25 which was also set at the Pac-10 Championships. Bishop cleared seven feed during the indoor track with a mark of 7-00.50. The high jump qualifying will be held Friday, May 28.
The top-48 in each region were selected to represent their schools in the two regional events with the top-12 in each region in each event advancing to the NCAA Division I 2010 Outdoor National Championships which will be held at Heyward Field in Eugene, Ore.
