Trojans Tied For Third After NCAA Region Second Round

Freshman Sam Smith continued to lead the No. 10 USC men's golf team for the second day in row while freshman Martin Trainer and junior Matt Giles joined him with par rounds at the 2010 NCAA Championships Regional second round at Gold Mountain G.C. in Bremerton, Wash., on Friday (May 21).
USC, eyeing its fourth straight team trip to the NCAAs, is tied for third at a combined 10-over 586 (297-289) after a strong 1-over second round. The top five teams in each regional - three with 13 teams and three with 14 teams -- will advance to the NCAA Championship final, scheduled for June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Host Washington leads the region at 7-under 569 while Illinois is in second at 9-over 585. USC is tied with San Diego at 586 with Oregon State fifth (587) and Colorado State sixth (589). Middle Tennessee State is seventh (593) and VCU is eighth (595).
Smith is tied for 11th at 1-over 145 (73-72) while Trainer is tied for 22nd at 3-over 147 (75-72). Each had a 1-under front 9 and a 1-over back 9. Sophomore Steve Lim is tied for 25 at 4-over 148 (75-73) while freshman T.J. Vogel (74-75) and Giles (77-72) are tied for 32nd at 5-over 149.
Giles had five birdies on the day to offset three bogeys and a double. Lim had two birdies against one bogey and one double while Vogel had three bogeys in his round.
