Cats Rally to Defeat Stanford, 9-8
May 22, 2010
TUCSON, Ariz. – Steve Selsky drove a double to right centerfield to plate two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning that handed the Arizona baseball team a 9-8 come-from-behind victory over Stanford on Saturday evening at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium.
Bryce Bandilla, pitching with a fractured right non-throwing wrist, struck out three batters in 1.2 innings of relief as he earned the win out of the bullpen. He retired the Cardinal in order in the top of the ninth inning, including striking out the final two batters of the game.
Arizona (32-19, 11-12 Pac-10) entered the bottom of the eighth trailing by a run and facing reliever Brian Busick, who had pitched well after taking over for starter Jordan Pries, who allowed six runs on seven hits in four-plus innings of work.
However, Busick issued consecutive walks to Rafael Valenzuela and Jett Bandy to open the eighth, before Mark Appel took over. Selsky, who was hitless in the game, delivered the two-run double to the gap off Appel that scored Valenzuela and Bandy and give UA the 9-8 lead.
Valenzuela, who was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, staked the Wildcats to a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a sole home run to right field.
Stanford (29-21, 12-11 Pac-10), claimed a 4-1 advantage in the fourth inning. The Cardinal scored four runs on four hits off UA starter Kyle Simon, who pitched 6.2 innings and allowed seven runs.
The Wildcats answered back with a run scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the third, before Stanford reclaimed a three-run lead with a single run in top of the fourth.
Arizona exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth, forcing Pries from the game. Joey Rickard walked to lead off the frame and Valenzuela followed with a single. Bandy stepped up and launched a three-run home run to left field, snapping a 26-game home run drought for the Johnny Bench Award semifinalist.
The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the inning when Seth Mejias-Brean lined a single to left field that scored Selsky from third. Cole Frenzel, who extended his hitting streak to 13-straight games, also scored on the play as the ball was bobbled in the outfield.
Simon held the Cardinal scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, but ran into trouble in the top of the seventh. Ben Clowe hit a two-run home run to left field that tied the game at 7-7.
The Cardinal gained a one-run lead an inning later after Nick Cunningham issued a lead off walk to Jake Schlander. Bandilla took over with one out in the inning, walked the first batter he faced, which moved Schlander to second. Stephen Piscotty singled to drive home Schlander. Bandilla finished the inning without any further damage, and allowed the Wildcats to mount the rally in bottom of the inning.
Arizona concludes its 2010 regular season home schedule on Sunday. The rubber match is set to begin at noon at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium.
