Stanford Falls 6-3 To No. 16 Hawai'i

STANFORD, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Stanford softball team dropped a 6-3 decision to the tournament's No. 16 seed Hawai'i, in the first game of the Stanford Regional Saturday at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal drops to 37-18 on the season while the Rainbow Wahine remains in the winner's bracket at 46-13.
Junior Ashley Chinn took the loss for the Cardinal, falling to 12-9 on the year. She gave up six runs on 10 hits, while fanning six batters in 7.0 innings of work. The Rainbow Wahine's Stephanie Ricketts improved to 26-7 with the win.
The Cardinal trailed 6-0 after three innings. Hawai'i scored two runs in the opening inning on a double to left center by Alexandra Aguirre. Rainbow Wahine third baseman Melissa Gonzalez hit a three-run home run to centerfield in the second inning, while first baseman Amanda Tauali'i hit a solo shot in the third inning to add to the Hawai'i lead.
Stanford registered its first hit in the third inning, a single to left field by sophomore Jenna Becerra. The first baseman moved into scoring position as Sarah Hassman grounded out to the pitcher, bringing up the top of the order for the Cardinal. With two outs, Haber kept the inning alive, singling down the right line to score Becerra. Hansen continued the rally, recording her second triple of the year to bring home Haber and cut the Hawai'i lead to 6-2.
The Cardinal added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Again with two outs, designated player Melisa Koutz doubled down the left line to put a runner in scoring position. Right fielder Maya Burns then tallied Stanford's second triple of the game, scoring Koutz, pulling within three of the Rainbow Wahine. However, the Cardinal was unable to rally a comeback, falling 6-3.
Stanford will now play in an elimination game at 6 p.m. PT against the winner of the Texas Tech-UC Davis game being played at 3 p.m. PT. Hawai'i will next play the winner of game five at 1 p.m. Sunday.
