Michael Weaver Named Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week
May 24, 2010
BERKELEY - Michael Weaver was named the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday, marking the first time in his career he has won the honor and the second time in 2009-10 a men's golfer has earned the award. Eric Mina previously picked up the recognition on May 3.
Playing in his first NCAA event ever at the 2010 NCAA San Diego Regional, Weaver led the Golden Bears back to the NCAA Championships for the first time since Cal won its lone national title in men's golf in 2004. Cal tied for third place in the event to mark its best regional finish ever and the freshman's eighth place showing was the highest by a Cal player at an NCAA Regional since Peter Tomasulo tied for sixth in 2004. Weaver, who finished one-over par in an event that featured only four players under par, was near the top of the leader board for most of the tournament and was tied for fourth heading into the final round. His performance followed a stellar effort at the Pac-10 Championship in April when he tied for sixth.
Weaver and his teammates will play at the 2010 NCAA Championships being held June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The following day Weaver will play in U.S. Open qualifying action with an opportunity to make the field at the 2010 U.S. Open being played June 14-20 at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. If Weaver were to qualify, he would join future Cal men's golfer Ben An, a current high school senior who has signed a national letter of intent to join the Bears for the 2010-11 season.
