Beavers Travel to Texas for West Regional

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Four members of the Oregon State women's track team along with two football student-athletes will travel this week to Austin, Texas for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Regional on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin May 27-29.

'It's great seeing so many of our athletes make it to the regional,' Oregon State women's track head coach Kelly Sullivan said. 'This is the most that we've had since we brought the program back in 2004 which just shows us that we're moving in the right direction. It is also really good to see that we have some men who will be representing Oregon State for the first time since 1988.'

All but one of the athletes competing this week will be participating at regional for the first time in their collegiate careers. Only sophomore Casey Masterson has made it to a regional which was last season in the 1,500-meters.

Masterson will be competing again in the 1,500 meter run along with Oregon State 1,500-meters record holder Laura Carlyle. The pair will be the first to compete at the regional for the Beavers when they race in their first round qualifying race Thursday, May 27 starting at approximately 3 p.m. PST. They will be trying to advance to the quarterfinals for the event which are slated to be Saturday, May 29. Carlyle and Masterson are one and two on the all-time list at Oregon State in the 1,500-meters.

Friday, May 28 is all about the high jump for the Oregon State competitors when football student-athletes Obum Gwacham and Jordan Bishop. It will be the first time since 1988 that male student-athletes have represented the Beavers in a NCAA regional event.

Gwacham is seeded 12th going into the NCAA West Regional with a qualifying height of 7-01.50 which he cleared at the Pac-10 Championships. Bishop comes in with a qualifying height of 6-10.25 which was also set at the Pac-10 Championships. Bishop cleared seven feed during the indoor track with a mark of 7-00.50. The high jump qualifying will be held Friday, May 28.

The final day of competition will be Saturday, May 29 when Abby Chesimet and Sandra Martinez will compete in the 5,000-meters semifinal. They are one and two on the all-time list at Oregon State for the event and both broke the previous school record at the Stanford Invitational in late March.

The top-48 in each region, east and west, were selected to represent their schools in the two regional events with the top-12 in each region in each event advancing to the NCAA Division I 2010 Outdoor Track and Field National Championships which will be held at Heyward Field in Eugene, Ore. June 9-12.
