STANFORD, Calif. - The academic honors continue for sophomore wrestler Nick Amuchastegui as he was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic At-Large District VIII First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America last week.
Amuchastegui, who boasted the highest GPA of all Division I wrestlers this season, holds a 3.94 GPA in mechanical engineering at Stanford. With the first team selection, he is now eligible for the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
Amuchastegui has already earned Pac-10 All-Academic First Team and NWCA Academic honors for the second straight season. Additionally, he garnered the first annual NCAA Elite 88 Award, given to the wrestler with the highest GPA at the NCAA Championships.
The Talent, Ore., native finished his redshirt sophomore season with a 34-6 record. In the course of the season, Amuchastegui secured Stanford's first Pac-10 Championship and All-America honors since 2008. He led the team with 64 dual points, captured the conference title at 165 pounds and placed fourth at the NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb. His fourth-place finish was the highest for a Cardinal at NCAA's since now assistant coach Matt Gentry won the 157 pound crown in 2004.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.
