May 26, 2010
AUSTIN, Texas - The field is set and primed to go. Every athlete dreams at a shot at a National Championship. For the next three days, 31 UA track and field athletes will look to set themselves up for a shot at theirs.
The University of Arizona track and field team is in Austin, Texas for the week to take part in the NCAA National Championships - West Preliminaries. Forty-eight athlete will start in each event, but only the top 12 will get their shot to compete for the ultimate title in Eugene, Ore.
For these athletes, the meet is a shot to show just how far they have come over the year and try to prove that they truly rank among the nation's elite.
The UA women are coming off from a runner-up finish at the Pac-10 Championships and have rocketed to No. 15 in the country according to the most recent USTFCCCA rankings. Starting Thursday, they will look to show the country that these performances are no fluke.
For the men, it has been a rebuilding year but they still have plenty of talent represented in Austin to make a splash and possibly even score some points at nationals - where the competition is so high that only a couple points can be the difference between a final top-25 ranking and an otherwise unnotable finish.
The list of UA qualifiers and their ranking coming into the meet can be found here. Events will begin at Mike A. Myers stadium on Thursday at noon and continue through Saturday as they fields dwindle down to the final twelve.
