Third-ranked and 2010 Pac-10 Champion California returns to Lake Natoma this week for the 2010 NCAA Championships from May 28-30 in Gold River, Calif. Cal enters the national championships with its varsity 8+ boat currently undefeated. The other Pac-10 teams in the 2010 NCAA field are Washington, Stanford, USC, UCLA and host Washington State. The rest of the field consists of Brown, Clemson, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Princeton, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin and Yale.
Bears Claim Third Straight Pac-10 Title
Cal won the Pac-10 Championship for the third consecutive season on May 16 at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. The varsity 8+ was the lone individual boat that was victorious for the Bears. In the overall team standings, Cal edged Stanford for the conference crown, 39.5-39.0, with Washington taking third with 31.5 points. Cal was also the only team to medal in each event. Cal has now won seven team Pac-10 titles (1994, 2004, 05, 06, 08, 09, 10), including the last three in a row and the last six out of seven. The Bears finished in second in 2007.
Last Year's NCAA Championships
Cal took second place in the final team standings at the 2009 NCAA Championships at Cooper River Park in Cherry Hill, N.J. The Bears compiled 85 points after placing third in the varsity 8+ grand final, second in the second varsity 8+ grand final and fourth in the varsity 4+ grand final. Stanford won the national team championship with 88 points, with Yale third (85). Cal finished ahead of Yale by virtue of a better varsity 8+ grand final finish; Yale's varsity 8+ was fourth, more than two seconds behind Cal. It marked Cal's seventh top-four finish in the last 11 years.
Cal's History at the NCAA Championships
The Bears have claimed the team national title twice in school history (2005, 2006). They have placed in the top three the past two years - 3rd in 2008 and 2nd in 2009. Cal also placed third in 2002. The varsity 8+ took first in 2005 and, since 1979 (including AIAW National Championships), has earned seven top-three finishes. Last season, the varsity 8+ finished in third. The varsity 4+ has won twice in the national meet (1980 and 1981).
