16 is Sweet for Women's Tennis at NCAA Championships
May 27, 2010
ATHENS, Ga. - No. 2-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Jana Juricova earned her 16th-consecutive singles victory to advance to the round of 16 in the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship on Thursday (May 27) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of host University of Georgia. The second-year Golden Bear cruised to her 18th straight set victory to defeat No. 43 Irene Rehberger of South Florida, 6-2, 6-1. It was Juricova's team-high 41st singles win of the season.
Juricova draws No. 13 Maria Mosolova of Northwestern on Friday (May 28) in the round of 16. Mosolova defeated No. 54 Katrina Tsang of North Carolina, 6-0, 7-6(4), to advance. This will be Juricova's second appearance in the NCAA singles round of 16 and marks her third head-to-head meeting with Mosolova.
She turned a No. 1-ranked Mosolova away with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the top court during the 2009 NCAA team championship quarterfinal in their first meeting and earned a 6-3, 6-1 win in the semifinals of the ITA Team Indoor Championship on Feb. 14.
No. 35-ranked junior Mari Andersson had her run in the singles championship cut short as she fell, 6-2, 6-3, to a streaking No. 46-ranked Noelle Hickey of UCLA. Andersson completes her second season with the Bears with a 33-10 singles mark that includes a 23-2 record in dual matches.
As the ninth-ranked duo in the country, Andersson and Juricova began defense of their 2009 NCAA doubles title with an impressive come-from-behind victory over Florida's No. 26-ranked tandem of Lauren Embree and Anastasia Revzina. After the Gators edged the Bears for the first set in the tiebreaker, the Cal pair found itself down, 5-4, in the second set and on the verge of being sent home in the first round. However, Andersson and Juricova stood fast and fought back to stun the Gator duo for a 7-5 win to force a third set. That was all the change Cal needed as the pair cruised to an impressive 6-1 win in the third to advance to the round of 16.
Andersson and Juricova will take on the winner between Denver's No. 54-ranked team of Ute Schnoy and Sophia Bergner and Miami's No. 6-ranked tandem of Gabriela Mejla and Laura Vallverdu.
Times for matches will be announced with the conclusion of all round of 32 play. Please visit www.ncaa.com for live score updates and streaming video of all matches.
