Dahan and Zerbini Bow Out of NCAA Doubles Championship
May 27, 2010
ATHENS, Ga. - The California men's tennis team completed its 2009-10 schedule on Thursday, May 27, as the No. 30-ranked duo of juniors Jonathan Dahan and Pedro Zerbini fell in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Doubles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of host University of Georgia. The Golden Bears were edged by South Carolina's No. 25-ranked tandem of Pedro Campos and Diego Cubas, 7-6, 6-4, with a 7-4 count in the first-set tiebreaker.
The two teams battled for the first set tooth and nail but the Gamecocks stiffened up at the net and prevailed by taking a 7-4 win in the decisive tiebreaker.
Into the second set, the Bears claimed the first game on tough serving by Dahan. The Gamecocks had to fight off several game-points before coming up with an overhead slam to tie the set at one-all. Zerbini held serve in game three and did not give up a point to help Cal coast to a quick 2-1 lead. Again, South Carolina held to knot things up at two-games all. The teams then each held serve once more to push the score to three-all.
On the strength of its service, Cal went in front, 4-3, but the Gamecocks stayed true to the script once more to knot the score for the fourth time in the set. However, South Carolina applied pressure on Dahan's serve in the next game to earn the first break of the second set and take a 5-4 lead. The Gamecocks didn't hold back in the 10th game as they went ahead without dropping a point by serving aggressively.
Dahan and Zerbini complete their seasons with a 13-8 overall mark including an 8-5 record in dual matches.
