Bishop Advances to NCAA Championships in High Jump
May 28, 2010
AUSTIN, Texas - Football student-athlete Jordan Bishop became the first male Oregon State athlete to advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships since 1988 when he qualified Friday in the high jump after clearing a height of 7-00.25 in a jump-off and will compete at Heyward field in Eugene, Ore. June 9-12. Eugene was also the location for the 1988 national championships.
After nearly four hours in extreme heat, Bishop claimed the 12th and final qualifying spot in the high jump at the West Regional in a jump-off with teammate Obum Gwacham.
'It was ironic after everything that these guys have done all year for it come down to them for the final spot,' Oregon State women's track head coach Kelly Sullivan said Friday. 'It's only fitting that for any of our seven football players that have worked out with us this year that Jordan would be the one to advance to nationals. He has been the driving force behind the guys getting out on the track and competing.'
It came down to a jump off for the final two spot between Bishop, Gwacham and Darrell Roddick from Texas Tech. Roddick cleared the starting height of 7-01.00 and claimed the 11th spot when Bishop and Gwacham missed. The Bar was dropped to 7-00.25 where Gwacham took the first jump and came up short. Bishop jumped next and cleared the mark to claim the final spot.
'This is just another big step forward for the track program at Oregon State,' Sullivan said. 'It's been a pretty amazing year and it looks like we're not done yet.'
Sophomore Casey Masterson advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1,500 meter run with her personal best time Thursday and will run Saturday. Also running Saturday, will be Abby Chesimet and Sandra Martinez in the quarterfinal run of the 5,000-meters.
