Women's Track Season Comes to End at NCAA West Regional
May 29, 2010
AUSTIN, Texas - Sandra Martinez finished ninth in her heat of the 5,000-meters in a time of 17:03.46 Saturday at the NCAA Division I Track and Field West Regional in Austin, Texas.
'Sandra had a great day,' Oregon State track head coach Kelly Sullivan said Saturday night. 'She stuck her nose in there and finished ninth in a tough heat. It was a great way to cap off a great freshman year.'
Martinez finished 18th overall and missed out on qualifying for the NCAA semifinal. Running the 5,000-meters with Martinez was junior Abby Chesimet who finished with a time of 18:23.20 and also missed the semifinal cut.
Sophomore Casey Masterson ran in the 1,500 meter quarterfinals Saturday but missed the cut to move on to the semifinals. She finished 23rd overall with a time of 4:31.99.
'Casey and Abby have been a little under the weather and didn't fully recover as quickly as we were hoping,' Sullivan said. 'Overall it was a great year having four of our runners qualify for the regional.'
With nobody making the cut to move on to the NCAA national championships next week in Eugene, Ore. the women's track season comes to a close.
'It was an amazing year with a lot of great things happening for our program,' Sullivan said. 'All four of our NCAA regional qualifiers will be back next fall for our cross country which will be very important for us. It has been great having men back and competing in track representing Oregon State. It is exciting to see Jordan (Bishop) advance in the high jump and it will be good to see an Oregon State uniform representing the school at the NCAA national championships again for the first time since 1988.'
Bishop advanced to the NCAA national championships in Eugene Friday afternoon when he claimed the 12th and final qualifying in a jump-off with teammate Obum Gwacham.
