Huskies Fall To USC On Final Day Of Season
May 30, 2010
LOS ANGELES - USC used a seven-run eighth inning to overcome two early deficits and beat the Washington baseball team, 11-5, on the final day of the 2010 season.
Washington finished the year 28-28 overall and 11-16 in the Pac-10 Conference. USC finished 28-32 and 7-20 in league play.
Trailing 5-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Trojans came up with seven runs. A Kevin Roundtree single with the bases loaded tied the game at 5-5 before Matt Hart was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put USC in front for the first time. Five more runs came across to ice the game for USC.
UW reliever Jacob Clem (4-4), who had worked two and one-third scoreless innings entering the eighth, took the loss.
USC's Shuhei Fujiya (5-1) picked up the win, retiring the one batter he faced in the top of the eighth.
The Huskies burst out for three runs in the second inning. Chase Anselment singled and Pierce Rankin was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Anselment scored on a single from Troy Scott and, after Rankin was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a ground ball, catcher Miles Kizer drove in two with a double, staking the UW with a 3-0 lead.
USC scored its first run in the fourth as Ricky Oropesa, who hit three homers in Friday's game, belted his 20th of the year to lead off the inning.
The Huskies increased the lead to 4-1 when Anselment doubled and scored on a single from Troy Scott in the fifth, but USC tied it at 4-4 when Mike O'Neill belted a two-run homer and Garret Houts followed with a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth.
That tie remained in tact until the seventh, when Bradley Boyer singled and eventually scored on a Kizer single.
However, the Trojan's seven-run eighth inning put the game away.
