Santos, Gaviglio Honored By The Pac-10
May 31, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Oregon senior outfielder Adalberto Santos and sophomore right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio have been named the Pacific-10 Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday, as announced by league commissioner Larry Scott.
The announcement comes on a rather busy Memorial Day for the Beavers, who, earlier today, were selected to participate in the NCAA's Gainesville Regional starting Friday.
Santos, of New York, N.Y., helped guide the Beavers to a 3-1 record last week, including a 2-1 series win over Arizona to close out the 2010 regular season. The senior outfielder was 8-for-15 from the plate for a .533 batting average. He accounted for eight runs - scoring four and driving in four - and had two home runs, one double and triple and tallied a slugging percentage of 1.133. He also walked twice and was a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts.
Santos has now reached base safely via hit or walk in 37-straight games. Santos finished the regular season leading the Beavers with a .337 batting average and stolen bases (18) and is second on the squad in home runs (10) and RBI (35).
It is the first Player of the Week honor for Santos and the first of the season for the Beavers.
In Saturday's 5-0 victory over the Wildcats, Gaviglio notched a career-high 13 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings of work. The sophomore right-hander from Ashland, Ore., walked just two batters and allowed five hits to improve to 3-3 this season and 13-4 lifetime at Oregon State.
Gaviglio dominated the Wildcat hitters as he forced Arizona to for 1-for-14 with runners on base and 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Gaviglio finished the season with a 4.65 ERA, .257 opponent batting average and 44 strikeouts in 60 innings of work.
It is the first Pitcher of the Week honor of Gaviglio's career and the fourth honor for the Beavers this season.
