Trainer Leads Second Day At NCAA Championships
June 2, 2010
Freshman Martin Trainer fired a 1-under 71 while freshman T.J. Vogel and sophomore Steve Lim were both even during a solid second round for the No. 10 USC men's golf team on Wednesday (June 2) at the 2010 NCAA Championships at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
USC, in its 51st NCAA final appearance and fourth NCAA team final trip in a row under fourth-year head coach Chris Zambri, combined for a 2-over 290 and is now 9-over 585 (295-290).
Rainy weather delayed much of the second wave of teams on Wednesday. With a handful of teams still playing the second rounds - which will have to be completed Thursday morning - USC was tied for 16th overall (at the time of this writing).
Though the round is incomplete, most of the leaders finished their rounds. Florida State is in first at 14-under 562 while Oklahoma State (567) and Georgia Tech (572) were also in the clubhouse at second and third, respectively. Augusta State was fourth (575) with Florida and San Diego tied for fifth (576) and Washington and Clemson tied for seventh (577).
The NCAA Championships format features 54 holes of stroke play with the top eight teams advancing to a three-day match-play tournament. In 2009, the first year of the current format, Troy finished tied for third to advance to match play. USC finished the second round last year tied for 12th place, four strokes out of eighth place and 18 out of first place.
USC shaved five strokes from its first round total on Wednesday and will need to show similar improvement Thursday and get a little help from teams above them to finish in the top eight this year.
Overall, Vogel (74-72), Lim (72-74) and Trainer (75-71) are tied for 58th at 2-over par while junior Matthew Giles is tied for 94th at 4-over 148 (73-75) and freshman Sam Smith is tied for 92nd at 5-over 149 (74-75) (at the time of this writing).
Trainer had five birdies on the day, including three on a 1-under back 9. Vogel was had four birdies and four bogeys, even on both the front and back 9. Lim had two birdies and two bogeys, also even on both halves of the course.
Giles was 1-over on the front 9 and 2-over on the back 9 while Smith followed a 3-over front 9 with an even back 9.
