Canha, Krist, Jones and Renda Named First-Team All-Pac-10

The Cal baseball team (29-23), preparing to play North Carolina (36-20) Friday (June 4, 7 p.m. CT) in the NCAA Norman (Okla.) Regional, had four players (junior first baseman Mark Canha, sophomore catcher Chadd Krist, freshman left-hander Justin Jones, freshman designated hitter Tony Renda) named first-team All-Pac-10 today. The Golden Bears' junior second baseman Brian Guinn was also named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year, while sophomores Marcus Semien, Erik Johnson and Danny Oh were named honorable mention all-league it was announced by Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott.
Canha (San Jose, Calif.) is batting .323 with 11 doubles and nine home runs (including three grand slams), and leads the Pac-10 with 67 RBI. He also tops Cal with 18 multiple RBI games, has 18 multiple hit games and is eighth in the conference with nine home runs. Canha's 67 RBI is fourth on the Bears' all-time single-season list.
Krist (Petaluma, Calif.) is hitting .344 with 15 doubles, three triples and is fifth in the Pac-10 with 10 home runs. He also has 43 RBI and has started 51 games behind the plate for Cal this season.
Freshman left-hander Jones (Oakdale, Calif.), who will be the Bears' starter Friday versus North Carolina, is second in the Pac-10 with 10 wins (10-5, 3.77 ERA), fourth with 98.0 innings and fifth with 30 strikeouts looking. He has been a part of two shutouts and has thrown two complete games this season, including a 6-4 victory March 12 at Rice.
Freshman designated hitter Renda (Hillsborough, Calif.) is the Bears' leading hitter with a .365 average, fifth-best in the Pac-10. He is also ranked in the Top-10 in the conference in doubles (fourth, 19), triples (fifth, 4), hits (sixth, 76), runs (sixth, 52), stolen bases (seventh, 13) and total bases (ninth, 112).
Guinn (El Sobrante, Calif.) becomes the first Cal player to earn Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year honor. He has started 50 games at second base this season, registering a .977 field percentage, while committing just six errors. He also has 94 putouts and was second on the team with 158 assists. In addition, he is hitting .324 with 12 doubles, four triples, one home run, 15 stolen bases and 29 RBI. His five triples ranked fifth in the Pac-10.
Shortstop Semien (El Cerrito, Calif.) has been a solid double play combo with Guinn this year while also batting .333 with 17 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 34 RBI. Hard-throwing right-hander Johnson is 6-3 with a 3.62 ERA and a save earned in the Bears' 4-3 victory at Oregon May 28. He has registered 70 strikeouts in 72.0 innings. Left fielder Oh (Mill Creek, Wash.) is currently hitting .307 with 11 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 30 RBI, starting in all 52 of the Bears' games.
Earlier, Cal had four players earn Pac-10 All-Academic honors. Sophomore right-hander Dixon Anderson (5-3, 5.09 ERA) was named first-team Pac-10 All-Academic with a 3.64 GPA in Society and Environment. In May, Anderson (Piedmont, Calif.) was selected to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine District 8 All-Academic. Canha, Johnson and junior right-hander Brian Diemer (1-2, 2.20 ERA, two saves, 21 strikeouts in 28.2 innings) were tabbed second-team Pac-10 All-Academic.
