Wildcats Earn All-Conference Honors
June 3, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Three University of Arizona baseball players were named to the 2010 Pacific-10 All-Conference team, commissioner Larry Scott announced on Thursday.
Sophomores Jett Bandy and Steve Selsky were joined by freshman teammate Kurt Heyer on the all-league team, marking the third-consecutive season that the Wildcats placed three players on the team. The honors are the first for all three players, although Bandy and Selsky were honorable mention selections a year ago in their respective freshmen seasons.
Bandy turned in a steady sophomore campaign as he became Arizona’s every day catcher despite never playing the position a year ago. The 6-foot-4 native of Thousand Oaks, Calif., started all 55 of UA’s regular season games, including 48 behind the plate. On the year, Bandy ranked No. 4 in the league in batting average (.367), No. 6 in on base percentage (.457), No. 6 in runs scored (52), No. 5 in hits (77), and No. 2 in doubles (22). He was hit by a pitch 19 times, which tied for the most of any player.
Selsky was UA’s most consistent offensive performer throughout the season and started all 55 games in right field. The native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., nearly captured the Pac-10 batting crown, but finished second with an impressive .383 average while he led the conference in total hits with 85. Selsky ranked No. 4 in slugging percentage (.622), No. 5 in on base percentage (.463), No. 3 in runs (56), No. 5 in RBI (53). He checked in the top-10 in doubles (17), triples (6) and home runs (8).
Heyer emerged as the Wildcats’ Friday night starter early in the season and has held the post throughout the year. The 6-foot-2 native of Huntington Beach, Calif., struck out a UA freshman record 104 batters through the regular season, while issuing just 15 walks. Heyer posted a 6-4 record in 96.0 innings with a 3.28 ERA, which ranks No. 10 among all Pac-10 pitchers. The ERA currently would be the lowest ever for a UA freshman pitcher with at least tomorrow’s start against Baylor still to go.
On Wednesday afternoon, the league announced that Simon and Grayson Adams were named to the Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention list.
Arizona (33-22) opens regional action on Friday against Baylor. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CDT at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.
