NCAA Outdoor Championships Begin Wednesday

    The Stanford track and field teams will travel to Eugene, Oregon, to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships this week, June 9-12. The No. 10 men's team and unranked women's team will look to bring home high finishes at the national championships. Action from historic Heyward Field on the campus of Oregon gets underway at 1:00 pm, Wednesday with the heptathlon. Running events will begin at 3:50 pm with Stanford first seeing action in the women's 4x100-meter relay at 4:15.

    Cardinal Participants
    Stanford will send seven men, seven women and the women's 4x100-meter relay. The Cardinal men will all compete on the track with a great group in the distances and a pair of 400-meter hurdlers. Elliott Heath, Chris Derrick and Jake Riley will compete in the 5,000 meters, while Riley will also double in the 10,000. Also in the distances, JT Sullivan will compete in the steeplechase, while Dylan Ferris will lace it up in the 1,500. In the hurdles, Amaechi Morton and Durell Coleman will square off in the intermediates.

    The women's squad is a bit more balanced with four individuals on the track, three individuals in the field and the relay. Carissa Levingston will run the 100 meters and lead the relay. Also on the track are distance runners with Madeleine O'Meara in the steeplechase, Kathy Kroeger in the 5,000 meters and Stephanie Marcy in the 10,000. In the field, Arantxa King will compete in the long jump, while Katerina Stefanidi will pole vault and Jaynie Goodbody will throw the hammer.

    The New Format
    The qualifying for this year's NCAA Outdoor Championships took on a new form. Just two regional sites were used this year with straight qualifying rounds through to the NCAA finals. Each of the 24 competitors in each event in Eugene, qualified through rounds at the region meets with no at-large qualifiers added later.

    The Pac-10 Championships
    The Cardinal men finished third, while the women placed fifth and three athletes earned four individual Pac-10 titles. Chris Derrick won both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters to lead the men's team, while Jaynie Goodbody won the hammer throw and Katerina Stefanidi won the pole vault to pace the Cardinal women. The men scored 92 points, while the women scored 88.
