Primm & 4x100 Relay Advance To Event Finals At NCAA Championships
June 9, 2010
For the first time in over 10 years, UCLA will have competitors in the finals of the 800m and 4x100m at the NCAA Championships as Cory Primm and the foursome of Jamal Alston, Maxwell Dyce, Stan Griffin and Brandon Smith advanced to event finals in Eugene, OR on the first day of the outdoor meet.
Primm's career day was one for the record books as the junior clocked a new school and class record with his run of 1:45.70. Today's time broke both of Jess Strutzel's records (class/school-1:45.81) which was set in 1999. Primm was second in heat one and overall through the three preliminary rounds. His mark today is also the No. 2 mark in the NCAA this season, No. 3 on the USATF Outdoor list and improves upon his previous lifetime-best of 1:46.63, set May 8th at the Oxy Invite.
With today's run, Primm advances to the first individual event final of his career. He previously placed 13th in 2009 and 19th in 2008. This marks the first 800m NCAA final with a Bruin in it since 2000 when Strutzel finished fifth. The final will be held on Friday at 5:40 pm.
Also in the 800m, junior Scott Crawford was eighth in heat two and 16th overall, running 1:49.60. He does not advance to the 800m final. He ends the season ranked seventh all-time with a top mark of 1:47.78, set at the NCAA Preliminary Round in Austin, TX two weeks ago.
The 4x100m relay team of Jamal Alston, Maxwell Dyce, Stan Griffin and Brandon Smith also punched a ticket to the NCAA final. Griffin was running in place of Karlton Rolle who could not run due to a hamstring injury he sustained at the Preliminary Round two weeks ago. The Bruins were third in heat three and eighth overall with a time of 39.75 to secure the final spot into the final.
The last time a Bruin 4x100m advanced to the finals at NCAAs was in 1998 (4th overall). The last Pac-10 team to advance to the 4x100m final at NCAAs was Arizona in 2007 (placed 8th).
In the steeplechase, junior Dylan Knight finished 11th in heat two and 23rd overall with a time of 8:59.93. He does not advance to the steeple final.
