Stanford Alums Lead U.S. Past Germany In Montreux Tournament

STANFORD, Calif. – Led by Stanford alums Ogonna Nnamani and Cynthia Barboza, the U.S. Women’s National Team defeated Germany, 19-25, 35-33, 25-20, 25-22, Thursday, in its second match of the Montreux Volley Masters Tournament held in Montreux, Switzerland.

Team USA, now 2-0 in Pool A and concludes pool play on June 11 against Russia at 9 p.m. local time after an idle day on Thursday. Pool crossover matches take place on June 12, followed by the medal round on June 13.

Nnamani totaled 14 kills and an ace for the U.S., while Barboza added 10 kills and two aces for 12 points. The U.S. out-blocked Germany 10-6 and held an 8-6 advantage in aces. The Americans totaled 62 kills to the Germans 60. Team USA committed 28 errors to Germany’s 24.

Former Cardinal standout Kristin Richards subbed into the match for the final three sets.
