Moen Sets Steeple School Record

June 10, 2010

EUGENE, Ore. - It was raining and cold and the conditions could have given the most experienced athletes competing a reason to complain about poor performances. But for Hannah Moen, there was no need to find excuses.

The sophomore finished sixth in her 3000-meter steeplechase heat at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships to automatically qualify for Saturday's finals. And she did it in school record style.

The Flagstaff, Ariz., didn't look the part of someone competing in her first ever collegiate championship and her time of 10:13.13 is proof of that. Moen shaved four seconds off her previous personal best – set just two weeks ago at the West Prelims in Austin – passing SMU's Silje Fjortoft for sixth on the seventh lap and holding on through the eighth to nab the finally automatic qualification in her heat.

Her seventh lap was the second fastest of anyone else on the track and ironic in that it was around the person that passed her on the second to last lap in Austin to keep her from winning her heat there. And she did it in the pouring rain and cold breeze that made it feel a good ten degrees cooler that the official 55 degrees at the track at the time.

Moen will now look to Saturday where she will hope to add to the women's point tally and earn the first All-American honor of her career in the steeplechase final.

In other events on the day, the UA 4 x 400-meter team of Christina Rodgers, Echos Blevins, Deanna Sullivan and Georganne Moline came just over a second shy of qualifying for Saturday's final, finishing in 3:36.96 and 11th overall.

Sophomore Abdi Hassan also missed qualifying for the final in the 1500-meters, finishing in 3:46.37 to take 16th overall.

Tomorrow, the freshmen high jumping duo of Nick Ross and Edgar Rivera-Morales will be in action in finals as well as freshman Julie Labonte in the shot put final and junior Christina Rodger in the 800-meter final.
