Stanford Lightweight Head Coach Al Acosta Named CRCA National Lightweight Coach Of The Year
June 10, 2010
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford lightweight rowing head coach Al Acosta was recognized Thursday by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches' Association (CRCA) as its National Lightweight Coach of the Year. In 2009-10, Acosta led the Stanford lightweight eight to a national championship victory at the IRA Regatta, the first in Stanford history.
The announcement marks Acosta's second national coach of the year award, as he was selected for the same honor after leading the lightweight eight to a third-place national finish, its best-ever at the time, in 2008.
In 2010, Acosta guided the lightweight eight to its Grand Final at the IRA Regatta on June 5, where the boat upset favored Wisconsin for its first-ever national title. Previously at the IRAs, the Cardinal boat's highest finish had been third place.
The CRCA National Lightweight Coach of the Year award is voted on by the membership of the CRCA and is intended to recognize a head coach whose team has had outstanding success throughout the current season and who has demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach.
